Four Insulation Material Families

Glass wool, rock wool, rubber foam, and aluminum silicate fiber are used under different thermal, moisture, fire, and installation conditions. Comparing the four families begins with the service environment rather than with product shape alone.

Glass wool is used in building services, ventilation systems, pipelines, and equipment where thermal insulation and sound absorption are both considered. It can be supplied as boards, pipe sections, or blankets, allowing the insulation material to follow flat, cylindrical, or larger covered surfaces.

Rock wool is based on mineral fiber and is used where thermal insulation and fire classification are part of the project specification. Boards, pipe sections, blankets, and strips allow it to be arranged around walls, roofs, equipment, pipelines, and fire-barrier details.

Rubber foam uses a closed-cell structure. It is commonly selected for air-conditioning, refrigeration, and hot- or cold-medium systems where water-vapor control is part of the insulation design. Board and pipe forms can be matched to equipment surfaces and piping dimensions.

Aluminum silicate fiber is intended for high-temperature industrial locations such as kiln linings, furnace areas, hot pipelines, expansion joints, and refractory backing layers. Boards, blankets, and pipe sections provide several ways to place the insulation material within these assemblies.

A project comparison should therefore review operating temperature, fire requirement, moisture exposure, surface geometry, installation method, and required product form. These conditions provide the basis for choosing an insulation material family and then selecting its dimensions.
